Haematology Laboratory at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals

Laboratory overview

We perform routine screening tests across both sites of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Routine haematology services are also provided by department staff located in rapid response laboratories on both sites.

Key features:

General Haematology provides a comprehensive screening and diagnostic service using a range of state-of-the art technologies and manual laboratory procedures.

The laboratory provides the following tests 24/7:

  • FBC investigations
  • blood cell morphology
  • ESR and Plasma Viscosity
  • Paul Bunnell Test (Infectious Mononucleosis)
  • Malaria screening and confirmation tests

Our laboratories provide rapid analysis of patient specimens for basic parameters of the full test repertoire. The clinical leads in each area are involved in day-to-day diagnosis, being responsible not only for clinical advice but also analysis of difficult blood cell morphology, and provide bone marrow aspirate and trephine assessment.

These services are linked to the clinical provision of Haematology services within Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. There is a thriving anaemia clinic with specialist clinics for all types of haematological disease from myeloproliferative disorders to multiple myeloma.

Blood sciences is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory (No.8710), accredited to ISO15189:2012 for the tests listed in the schedule of accreditation on the UKAS website (https://www.ukas.com/wp-content/uploads/schedule_uploads/00007/8710-Medical-Multiple.pdf). Any tests not currently accredited are noted as such in the test details on this website.
